But it was fun to shoot for a while and shoot it I did (a lot). The cylinder probably didn't line up with the barrel as well as it should have which probably caused the lead fragments. The problems I had were a wide cylinder to barrel gap, sights that worked loose all the time, and since the gap was too large, it spit both lead and hot powder fragments out onto my hands. But you have to start somewhere and that is where I started my handgun experience. I stopped shooting it after buying a Colt Diamondback 22 and never missed it one bit. I believe I sold mine for $100 about 10-years ago. But you generally can't buy a Colt or Smith for under $300. They will never be a Colt or Smith & Wesson in terms of quality. Not a bad revolver for the money at the time. It had a 9-shot cylinder which was nice for plinking and the empties were ejected automatically when you broke open the action. My first handgun was an H&R 999 Sportsman which spouted a 6" barrel and top break for easy reloading. If all you want is plinking and paper punching, the bullet will never know which barrel it just left. Dollar for dollar, I'll take the RR's over the Single Six-I know, I've blasphemed Ruger, right? After 5 years, my RR's are still in excellent condition. I didn't pay for the name, sorta like buying at NAPA when you can get the same thing at Advance. When I bought my rough riders, my first two were consecutive serial numbers, each being half the price of a Single Six. I'm a tinkerer so I made my own shims by hand and they work fine. Once the bushings are installed, no more grinding. What causes this is the cast frame is softer than the steel of the cylinder, and the forward force of the hand pushing on the ratchet is strong, grinding the cylinder into the frame. 006" increments, about 5 or so in a pack.
Brownells/Midway sells shims for this, I believe in. My everyday RR did that, and it was very simple to fix. Guys, those of you with the light strikes, you have excess cylinder end-play. On the one that is my everyday 'carry' gun, I keep the mag cylinder in. I've got 3 Heritage Rough Riders, had them for about 5 years now, and have only had a problem with one of them.
